Snake to attack Finke Desert Race

The boys from Snake Racing are madly working on their Finke Desert Race vehicle to get it finished in time for the race on 8th – 10th June.

With only a week more in preparation time and a NSW Off Road event coming up this weekend its all hands on board before the trek across to Alice Springs NT next week.

There is a large mix of vehicles heading to Alice Springs and the biggest line up of UTV vehicles for an event of this type in Australia this year. Of the 94 vehicles entered, 12 of them will be made up of UTV’s from around the country. This is very exciting for all teams but Wayne Murphy and Chris Taylor from Snake Racing are really looking forward to competing against all states, ready to give it a real go and will hopefully end up on the podium.

If you are not in the Northern Territory during this week make sure you check out the results, photos and updates throughout the following week.

Good luck to Wayne and Chris and the whole team from Snake Racing.

A bittersweet weekend at NSW ORC Crookwell

The boys suffered a bit of a battering at Round 2 of the NSW ORC at Crookwell on the weekend but still managed to finish 2nd in class which was a good result considering the conditions that they faced.

The weather served up a mixed bag with very cold temperatures on Friday and Saturday,  drizzling sleet on Saturday and an outstanding day of sunshine on Sunday. There was a bit of everything.

Snake Racing driver and navigator Wayne and Chris loved the track, they said it was brilliant, full of all types of terrain with sharp bends, open paddocks, hills and gullies. They dodged a Blue Tongue and Echidna along the way which made for some interesting driving.

After a successful day on Saturday with some great times it just wasn’t to be on Sunday morning. During heat 4 the boys suffered yet more damage to the Polaris XP 900 with 2 broken factory upper and lower right hand side ball joints which then intern damaged the steering rack and rack end, axle, caliper and break lines. All parts were replaced with new ones accept the brake caliper. This was yet another hit to the hip pocket. This incident saw Wayne and Chris struggle to stay in the game as they  did not finish that heat. After Wayne made a mad dash back to the pits on foot to crab the replacement parts Chris and himself did a great job getting the Polaris back together and back on its way for the final heat of the day which consisted of 10 laps.

Out of 12 vehicles that were left to compete in the final heat only 4 managed to make it home to the finish. Luckily Wayne was one of them. The heat really took its toll on everyone with minor injuries and body fatigue but there was some great racing with the vehicles battling right to the end.

As above Wayne’s times  were very impressive however they were not enough to keep him on track for another 1st place on the podium in class or a podium finish outright. 2nd in class was a good result but it knocked us back down the ladder in the outright stakes.  Lets hope round 3 sees them make a comeback and hopefully the Polaris won’t suffer any issues at the next event.

Congratulations to Michael Smith for taking 1st in the UTV class and Justin Guy for 1st outright at Crookwell.

Round 3, Wittitrin 300 will be held at Kempsey on 25th and 26th May.

NSW Off Road Championship Round 2 Crookwell on track.

This weekend sees the second round of the NSW Off Road Championship and Snake Racing will be back for more of what they gave out in Round 1. After placing 2nd outright and 1st in class driver Wayne Murphy is all geared up to keep the momentum going with the hope of another podium finish.

After significant repairs and replacements to the rear control arms, ball joints and control arm radius rods after round 1 the Polaris XP 900 is back in it’s best form for this weekend. The continuous damage after each rally is starting to get a little frustrating but the boys are pushing through.

Round 2 is held at Storriers Gravel Pit on Grabben Gullen Road Crookwell.

Make sure you check out our Facebook page after the event to see if you made the glossy photo pages. Tag yourself and your friends and share the event around.

    Good luck Wayne and Chris.

Ian Paltridge takes home 2nd at Cooper Rally Qld

For his first time behind the wheel of his Snake Polaris XP900 and his first drive in 4 years, Ian Paltridge had the adrenalin pumping to bring home 1st in class and 2nd outright at the Cooper Rally held at Landcruiser Mountain Park Qld a couple of weeks ago.

As a recent member added to the Snake Racing Rally Team Ian and his first timer navigator Khy Walsh have really set the pace for themselves at this event.

The Cooper Rally has been running for several years and mainly consists of vehicles from Class 7, 8 and Modified Outlaw Vehicles. Approx 30 vehicles took part in the event.  Ian just happen to win the last  series he competed in in 2009. The competitive side of him certainly hasn’t died down.

As Ian didn’t have any time for testing it really was a first for everything and we wish him well in his next event. Ian will be competing in the 4th round of the Qld Off Road Driver Series in Gympie 25th May.

Keep an eye on Ian’s progress via the Snake Racing webpage.

    AORC Revs Up

The 2013 Australian Off Road Championship revs into action this weekend with the return of the first round to Hyden in the Wave Rock tourist region of Western Australia.

The Komatsu-Brooks Hire Hyden 450 will see a mixture of 2012 AORC campaigners returning to defend their titles along with those aiming for a higher reward in 2013, new competitors on the AORC block and the return of some regulars to the circuit.

Reining Aus #1 Champions Matt Hanson and Leigh Wells have a new racing partner on board in Snap Printing for the new season and are ready to hit the ground running in the Snap SMU Racing Jimco, chasing back to back Australian Off Road Championship crowns.

Aus #3 Gerald Reid has a new navigator for the start of the 2013 racing year in Werner Zettle and has just announced a partnership with Gulf Western Oil for the Springwood Car Care team. Reid is relishing the challenge of running against Hanson after their competitive 2012 season along with the mix of talent on the Hyden competitor list.

Pro class is always one to watch with the upcoming season offering some talented competitors in the always hard fought class. SR Racing’s Shannon and Ian Rentsch are returning to the championship looking for their sixth crown while Outer Bounds Racing young guns Travis Robinson and Paul Currie will be pulling out all the stops to finish their 2013 campaign with the ultimate prize, the Aus #1 mantle.

Runamuk Racing have taking on a big challenge this year, planning on presenting three race cars at each round of the Australian Off Road Championship, with team owners Buddy and Kerry Crowe another on the long list chasing their first AORC title. Rhodes Racing have proven they are a team on a mission with Jack Rhodes putting in some impressive times in the ProLite class. With a new navigator in David Pullino on the seat, the team have stepped up from ProLite class to Pro class and have a new Jimco Aussie Special in the stable, and will be one to watch come the Easter weekend.

Hayden Tatnell has made the trek from Tasmania to compete in his BAT 1 Spec #10 machine and is a consistently fast finisher and could be another one to watch come the checkered flag.

The ProLite class crown is wide open with 2012 champion Matt Owen selling his Alumi Craft machine at the end of season. RevTech Motorsports Wes Cowie and Travis Milburn #108 are looking to get some runs on the board for their 2013 AORC aspirations and they head into round two at Finke. Fellow Tatts Finke Desert Race local Andrew Mowles has made substantial modifications to his Razorback over the summer break, converting the single seat to a twin seat configuration.

Driving five days from their Brisbane base to compete at Hyden shows the dedication that the Hartnett Motor Racing team have to their 2013 campaign, aiming to step up from their 2012 #203 plate to the class pinnacle #201 come years end. 2012 Super 1650 class Western Australian Off Road Champions Jeremy Lia and Xavier White will be biting at the heels of the Queenslanders as they take on the seven strong field of Super 1650s.

Extreme 2WD class will be the class to watch as the Geiser Brothers Trophy Trucks take on the Pro buggies for outright places. Geddit Racing’s Billy Geddes and Jamie Ward are quick peddlers in any language; leading the field at the third round of the 2012 Championship at Goondiwindi before a spectacular rollover ended their weekend. We also haven’t seen the best out of Beau Robinson in his relatively new drive; the Outer Bounds Racing #413 rolling at its maiden run at the 2012 Tatts Finke Desert Race while running at the pointy end of the field. Come the drop of the checkered flag on Sunday, the podium mix is anyone guess.

Four teams have nominated for Performance 2WD class with South Australian’s Scott Gould and Matt Haywood looking to go one better than their #502 2012 result. A strong field of nine Production 4WD’s has nominated for the opportunity to race at Smith’s Place for the final time with AORC stalwart Geoff Pickering and his young charge Dylan Watson returning to Hyden after their up and down 2012 campaign. With a strong local backing this class will be hotly contested all the way to the finish line.

The tin top classes are widely supported in Western Australia with 11 nominated for the Extreme 4WD class. Hunter Racing’s Colin Hunter and Simon Campbell will be hoping for a good start to their 2013 campaign, and with the New Zealand team and current class champions not defending this year, the title is wide open. Hunter will be looking for a good points haul this weekend to give the team a head start on the class competition with class nemesis, Clayton Chapman plans a return to the Championship in his new Mitsubishi Triton at round two.

Being the last time that competition will take place at Smithy Place, a large contingent of Western Australian locals has nominated to pay homage to the Smith family, the infamous course and the Western Desert Races for all their years of service to Western Australia Off Road Racing.

Who will be the last competitor to write their names in the off road history book, taking the final outright win at Smithy’s?

Dondingalong NSW Off Road Championship – A great result

The boys at Snake Racing are celebrating after a fantastic start to the season of the NSW Off Road Championship. The Jim Anderson Dozer Hire Dondingalong Off Road challenge was held in Dondingalong on the mid North Coast over the weekend and a field of 38 vehicles attended with 7 of the field making up the UTV class.

The larger class created alot more excitement for the boys and placed much pressure on the team to prove they have what it takes to place well in the series.  They proved it well and truly with 1st in class and 2nd outright. This was definitely one of the best results the guys have had in 2 years which is very promising for the remainder of 2013, though it is only the first round.

The boys spent weeks preparing their Snake XP900 and say the improvements sure did help their performance. This year the little 666 vehicle driven by Wayne Murphy and navigated by Chris Taylor has had a few adjustments. The boys are happy to report that their new Muzzys exhaust system and 2.5″ Fox shocks up front have certainly helped their efforts. Also added to the vehicle for extra safety and comfort is the Velo Apex seats. Wayne said the comfort and support the seat offers is fantastic and he really enjoyed driving in it.

Snake Racing wishes to thank Brendan Flett for all his help over the weekend and the boys say they couldn’t have done it without him. They also wish to thank the hospitality from the town as everyone they met were very accommodating and friendly and seemed to enjoy having the event in town.

Look out for the boys at round 2 on 20th and 21st April at Crookwell Gravel Pit Challenge.

For more pictures of the whole event check out our Snake Racing Facebook page.

    Third Dondingalong for Guy

Hunter Valley racers Justin Guy and Danny Richardson were victorious in the Jim Anderson Dozer Hire Dondingalong Off Road Challenge held just outside Kempsey on March 23/24.

The Pro Buggy pair have enjoyed plenty of success in the Dondingalong race, with 2013 marking their third victory in four years, having also won in 2010 and 2011.

Although Guy and Richardson finished one minute clear of the opposition it was no easy victory, with the Dondingalong circuit being a great equaliser in regard to driver ability and car power. This was illustrated by Wayne Murphy and Chris Taylor finishing second outright in the Snake Racing UTV #666.

Geoff Page and Braeden Barnes placed third in their Pro Buggy, with another Polaris, campaigned by Michael and Mike Roycroft , fourth.

Craig Anderson, driving the Jim Anderson Dozer Hire Prolite Buggy, finished 5th outright, his best result thus far in his brief off road racing career.

Rounding out the top 10 were David Nikiforoff and Sarah Hill (Super 1650 Buggy), Phil Swindale and Mat Costello (Utility Terrain Vehicle Polaris), Michael Smith and Scott Madson (Utility Terrain Vehicle Polaris), Gerard Bawden and Nathan Weissel (Pro Buggy), and Glenn Hoffmann (Pro Buggy).

27 of the original 38 starters completed the entire distance.
