The Tatts Finke Desert Race is an off road, multi terrain two-day race for bikes, cars, buggies and quads through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) community. The race is held each year on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. “Finke” as it is commonly known, is one of the biggest annual sporting events in the Northern Territory and has the reputation of being one of the most difficult offroad courses in one of the most remote places in the world. Finke is unique and the most fun you can have with a helmet on!

What an event for the Downunder Team. The Lucas Oil Chevy driven by Daniel Attard at this year’s Tatts Finke Desert Race had a huge roll in the prologue. The boys repaired the vehicle overnight only to roll again on the way to Finke on day 1.

You have to say they had a good go of it and put their heart and soul into it but better luck next year.

Day 1 saw Snake Racing on track to finish 1st in UTV class, until the last stage when they suffered rear shock failure and therefor adding precious time to the clock. Up until this stage the boys had a 7 minute lead on the next car. Wayne and Chris kept it together and drove the last 40kms with only 3 shocks. Their Polaris 666 made it to Finke but finished 6th out of 9 starters in class.

“What a day, to get so far and so close without any problems, but that is what racing is all about.” A frustrated Wayne said. “At least the team got there in the end”

Of 99 vehicles starting only 66 made it to Finke at the end of the day.

South Australian Hayden Bentley from Pro Class in his Race Buggy is currently sitting in 1st outright with a time of 1:49:48.

After a great day of shock testing with Fox Shocks yesterday, the boys at Snake Racing (Wayne Murphy and Chris Taylor) are off to a great start to the Tatts Finke Desert Race with a 1st in class in prologue this morning clocking a time of 6:28. They started out behind one other vehicle with a 1 minute interval but in true Wayne style he pushed the pedal to the metal and overtook that vehicle. His finishing time was a huge 16 secs ahead of the next UTV which was driven by Michael Roycroft from NSW.

Of 99 cars to travel to Finke Wayne’s time came in 56th outright which isn’t too bad when you look at the competition.

Here’s to a great event over the next few days and just making it there and back will be a win on it’s own.

The boys from Snake Racing have been working on their Polaris for Finke Desert Race over the past few weeks.
