Q. Can I fit a gear driven transfer to
a chain driven transfer ?
A. No, you can only mate 2 gear driven transfer cases together.
Q. If I have a chain driven transfer
can I fit a gear driven transfer to my gearbox ?
A. No, A chain driven gearbox is different to a gear driven.
Q. So if I have a chain driven gearbox
what can I do ?
A. The quickest solution is to obtain a gear driven gearbox.
Q. Is their a difference between a 4
& 5 speed transfer case ?
A. The obvious difference is 4 speed transfer has the 4x4
shifter coming out of the transfer (internal linkages) the 5
speed has 2 external linkages that place the 4x4
shifter in the gearbox extension housing. Other than that all
parts are interchangable.
Q: How are the 2 transfer cases connected
together ?
A: A special adapter plate joins the reduction section (only) of
one case to a complete transfer case. So a dual case is 1/2 of one
case (front) and a full second case (rear). This is why it's only
6.5" longer than stock.
Q. Can I run three transfer cases together
?
A. Yes, you can run as many as you want. As long as they are all
gear driven.
Q. Can I run dual transfers behind a
4 speed gear box ?
A. Yes, you would already have a top shifting transfer (4 speed)
and will need another as the donor transfer.
Q. Can I run dual transfers behind a
5 speed gearbox ?
A. Yes, chances are you have a forward shifting transfer now, you
will need to obtain a (gear driven) top shifting transfer as your
second transfer.
Q. Can I run dual transfers behind a
turbo 700 gearbox ?
A. Yes, as long as you have a adaptor to join Turbo 700 to the Hilux
gear driven transfers.
Q. What if I can't find a top shifting
transfer ?
A. This is not a problem, you can convert a forward shifting (external
linkages) to a top shifting (internal linkages) but leave this as
a last option as it is only another cost.
Q. How do I tell I have a gear or chain
driven transfer ?
A. 5 bolts on the rear flange is chain driven 7
bolts is a gear driven
Q. What other modifications do I need
to do to fit a dual transfers ?
A. 1. You will need to lengthen and shorten your tailshafts by 6.5"
inches. 2. Cut a 2 inch hole in the floor 300mm back from your original
4x4 shifter to accommodate the 4x4 lever. and modify the transfer
case cross member.
Q. Can I still retain the standard X
member ?
A: You can place the cross member in two different places. The stock
location or 6.5" back. The front location gives you a little better
break over clearance but requires a little cutting on some trucks.
The rear location does not require trimming but you will need to
buy U bolts to go around the frame or weld a plate to the underside
of the chassis for the cross member to mount to. Snake Racing recommends
installing its low profile dual X member.
Q. Will my speedo cable still connect
to dual transfers ?
A. YES. The dual transfer adapter kit comes with an 8" extension
cable that connects to your standard cable.
Q. Can the transfers be joined using
basic hand tools ?
A. Yes, the only major tool required is a press and a good set of
quality C clip pliers.
Q. How many gears will I have running
dual transfer cases ?
A. If you run a 5 speed gearbox & 2 standard transfer cases you
will have 15 forward & 3 reverse gears. If you run reduction gears
in the rear case you will have 20 forward & 4 reverse gears.
Q: Will the dual transfer affect my Hi
range ratios ?
A: In 2WD or 4WD hi, the high range remains the same. It is 1:1
and cannot be changed due to its straight through design. Therefore
the highway rpm's remain the same.
Q. Is it true I can use 2wd low ?
A. Yes, you will now be able to select 2wd low with the front hubs
locked. This is a great advantage for anyone running a self locking
front diff centre.
Q. I have heard that their are 21& 23
spline transfer cases ?
A. Yes that is correct, we did not get the 23 spline input shaft
in Australia. They only came in the 1986-87 EFI Turbo petrol tucks
in America.
Q. When would I need a 23 spline shaft
?
A. You would only need a 23 spline if you are very heavy on the
gas, run bigger than 38's and a V8. This is only a guide. Many people
run 500hp motors with a 21 spline and have no problems at all.
Q. Can I change from 21 spline to a 23
spline ?
A. Yes, you can install a 23 spline on the rear transfer case only.
Snake Racing can supply the 23 spline input shaft if you need them.
Please advise at the time you place your order for a dual transfer
adapter to make sure you receive the 23 spline coupler.
Q. What's involved in converting from
a 21 spline to a 23 spline ?
A. You will need a new 23 spline main shaft and a 23 spline coupler.
Q. Can Snake Racing supply all necessary
parts to do this conversion ?
A. All parts including rebuilt transfers can be bought through Snake
Racing
Q. Can I run reduction gears with 2 transfers
?
A. Yes, we recommend running the reduction gears in the rear case.
Q. What modifications are needed to fit
reduction gears to a transfer ?
A. The same you would normally do when running a single transfer.
You need to machine the inside of the transfer housing and shift
fork for the larger gears to fit.
Q. What if I already have reduction gears
fitted to my transfer ?
A. No problem, you need to obtain another top shifting transfer
and you have the ultimate crawler.
Q. How much oil does a dual transfer
need ?
A. Standard transfer case 1.6Lts a dual needs 2.8Lts
Q. What grade oil do you recommend ?
A. SAE 80-90
Q. How do you fill the dual transfer
cases ?
A. You fill the rear transfer case & the oil will flow through forward
and fill the front crawler case.
Q: What about extending breathers from
the gearbox and transfers ?
A: Toyota transmissions and t-cases vent through the shift handle
boot. Certain models have a separate vent located near the shift
handle that could be extended and relocated. This is rarely performed,
since water always seems to seek past the shift handle boot anyway.
